USAF F-22 Raptor
Well I must say this airshow was a success despite the weather and low clouds that affected most of the performances by the demo teams and civilian aerial acrobat performers. Like every airshow I like to get there early, setup and see the static line-ups and get up and personal with the crews and learn much about the aircrafts they have on display. This airshow was dubbed to be the best in the east as MCAS Cherry Point was celebrating 75 years since the base was first established. It was a three day activity where they have a Friday night show with fireworks and night flying by the civilian performers and the Marine TAC Demo with pyrotechnics followed by the fireworks, which ended abruptly due to a technical malfunction.
There was the deactivation ceremony for one of the prowler VMAQT-1 (Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Training Squadron 1) after years of service to the Marine Corps since the Korean War in 1952. The unit had long lineage that served in the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terrorism.
Over the next two days, there were over 100,000 visitors and they actually broke records, since they were not anticipated the large crowds, they even had to start turning way people from entering the base due to overcrowding, and limited parking spaces. Gathered from this information it was a success for MCAS Cherry Point base commander and the support elements that made this show possible.
There were many highlights from the show, the Canadian Forces CF-18 hornet demo team, F-35B demonstration, US Marines Corps AV-8B Harrier and many civilian acrobat performers and of course the US Navy Blue Angels demonstration team. Over the course of the two days, the weather played a major factor on the performers, the F-22 Raptor had to do a low performances and the Marines F-18s, F-35 and Harriers all had to modify their performances but in the end it was a success and I was happy to be part of their celebrations.
This was my second airshow and I must say this airshow season has been very spectacular, lots of high flying performances and hope to see everyone at my new next airshow at Shaw AFB 21-22 May 2016.
